Award season is underway! For production teams, that means weeks of rehearsals, technical runs, press events, red carpet logistics, and live broadcasts. None of it works without reliable communication.

Award show intercom systems carry the load. Clear-Com systems are already part of how award season productions operate, from nominated shows to the venues that host them. Our systems are relied upon not just for traditional theatre awards like the Tonys, but across music awards, televised ceremonies, and entertainment broadcasts. For instance, intercom solutions deployed on set for film production, music video shoots, reality TV productions, and live concert tours have supported award-winning performances that are broadcast to millions worldwide. These deployments highlight Clear-Com’s versatility and reliability, proving that no matter the type of award show, our systems keep the show running flawlessly.

Award Show Intercom Starts with the Venue

Award shows do not start from scratch. They rely on theatres and performance venues that already have communications infrastructure in place.

Many award season venues run Clear-Com systems year round. These systems support daily shows, visiting productions, and broadcast crews without needing to be rebuilt each time.

The David H. Koch Theater is one example. As the host venue for the 2024 Tony Awards, it used its existing Clear-Com intercom system to support rehearsals, technical coordination, and the live event itself.  Clear-Com completed an additional system upgrade in 2024 to support the event, installing Eclipse®  HX digital matrix panels, FreeSpeak II® wireless transceivers, and  LQ® Series IP Interfaces with the latest firmware, all interconnected through a robust IP-based network that enhanced theater-wide communication, provided reliable wireless coverage for crew, and allowed The Tony Awards production team to integrate with the in-house network without running hundreds of feet of cable.

This approach is common across Broadway and major performance venues. Many of these spaces host Tony nominated productions, award showcases, press events, and broadcast rehearsals throughout the season.

Supporting Nominated Productions

Award nominations focus on what happens on stage. Behind the scenes, nominated productions depend on tight coordination between departments.

Clear-Com award show intercom systems are widely used on Tony Award nominated productions, especially those recognized for Sound Design. Communication between audio, lighting, automation, and stage management needs to be constant and clear.

Gareth Owen, a Tony nominated sound designer, is a long time Clear-Com user. He integrates Clear-Com systems into his productions to keep teams aligned during complex shows. Nick Lidster of Autograph Sound, also nominated for Sound Design, has worked closely with Clear-Com on theatrical productions with demanding communication needs.

Cirque du Soleil’s Broadway musical PARAMOUR is another example. The production used HelixNet® digital partyline and FreeSpeak II wireless intercom to manage aerial performances, scene changes, and backstage coordination. These are the same types of challenges found in award season performances and showcases.

Clear-Com is also widely used across TV and film award-winning productions as well. Reality series like Love Is Blind and high-profile music productions, including Post Malone shoots and Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour prove that Emmy-nominated and Grammy-awarded artists trust Clear-Com to handle the complexity of live coordination.

Wireless Award Show Intercom on Stage and On Air

Award season productions are hard on wireless systems. Rehearsals and live broadcasts happen in crowded RF environments. There is no room for dropouts.

FreeSpeak II digital wireless intercom is used across Broadway, touring shows, and live events. It gives crews full duplex communication while staying mobile.

The Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Blvd shows how this works in practice. The production includes a live outdoor sequence that moves from backstage onto the streets of New York. The cast and crew must stay in sync with the orchestra inside the theater.

The production uses Arcadia® Central Station, multiple FreeSpeak II transceivers, and about 25 wireless beltpacks. The system supports real time communication between indoor and outdoor teams every night. This is similar to the coordination required for award shows and red carpet broadcasts.

Red Carpet and Perimeter Operations

Red carpet operations are some of the most complex parts of award season. Talent arrivals, press, security, and production teams all move at once. Plans change fast.

Clear-Com award show intercom systems extend communication beyond the stage and control room. Wireless beltpacks and IP connectivity allow teams to stay connected across indoor and outdoor areas.

Unlike two-way radios, intercom systems provide full duplex communication. Teams can talk and listen at the same time. This matters when timing is tight and decisions need to happen quickly.

Because the red carpet is tied into the same system as the venue, front of house teams stay connected to stage management, broadcast control, and production leadership.

Hybrid and Remote Award Show Intercom

Award season increasingly involves remote work. Producers, engineers, and coordinators may support shows from other locations.

Agent-IC®, combined with LQ Series IP interfaces, lets remote staff connect directly into intercom channels using mobile devices. They can listen, talk, and participate in rehearsals and live events without being on site.

Award Season Checklist for Award Show Intercom

As award season approaches, production teams and venues should check the following.

  1. The intercom system can scale for rehearsals, live broadcasts, and multiple productions at once.
  2.  Wireless communication holds up in RF dense environments.
  3.  Visiting broadcast and production teams can connect quickly.
  4.  Red carpet and perimeter areas are fully covered.
  5.  Remote staff can join securely when needed.

Clear-Com award show intercom systems are built to handle these conditions.

Built for Award Season

Award season puts communication systems under constant pressure. Schedules are tight. Environments are crowded. Mistakes are visible.

Clear-Com systems are already in place across award hosting venues, Tony Award nominated productions, Broadway theaters, and live broadcast environments. They support the work long before show night arrives.

As award season gets closer, Clear-Com continues to provide award show intercom solutions that production teams rely on to keep cues clean, timing tight, and communication clear from rehearsals to red carpet to broadcast.

Recognized by the Industry

Clear-Com is more than the backbone of award show communication. The company has been recognized by the same shows it supports. In 2010, the company and inventor Charlie Butten received Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for creating the Belt Pack: Distributed Amplifier Systems in Live Production.

These innovations have made Clear-Com a trusted partner for award season productions, live television, Broadway shows, and touring events worldwide. Award shows rely on Clear-Com, and Clear-Com has been honored by those same shows.
